Chapter 15: Five Jackets
Beck's POV
The Haverill yacht was tied up in Marina del Rey, white and long, with HALCYON painted across the stern in letters a foot high.
I had last seen that stern from the other side.
I stood on the dock in July sun with my hands in my pockets and made myself look at it for a full minute.
My stomach didn't like it.
"Is that the one?" the captain asked.
She was sixty-three and had spent thirty years on harbor patrol, and she had a closed, weathered face.
Addie had found her through the old assistant, who knew everybody.
I'd paid her a day rate to walk a marina with me and not ask questions.
"That's the one."
"Pretty."
"Yeah," I said.
"What are we looking at?"
"The tender."
It sat on the stern deck, a small white launch with six padded seats and a rope coiled in the bow.
I had last seen that rope around a woman's leg.
I walked up the gangway, because nobody had stopped me, and crouched beside the tender and counted the lifejackets in the open locker.
