Chapter 22: The Roof

The afterparty was on a rooftop in Hollywood with a pool lit bright green.

A DJ had been told to keep it down.

It was ten at night, and I was on my third glass of water because my roommate was watching.

Every crew member I'd ever worked with was there, and several people who had said they'd work with me if the show did well.

The old assistant sat in a lounge chair with his fur hat on his knee, being toasted by a succession of grips.

I was telling the sound mixer a story about the lakebed when the music stopped.

Somebody had taken the microphone from the DJ.

"Hey," said a voice I knew. "Can I say something?"

Roman stood on the little stage with the mic in both hands.

He was in a rumpled suit, sober, his face tired and swollen.

The room went quiet in ripples.

A man at the back whispered, "That's Ironclad," and somebody said, "He's not supposed to be here."

I started across the roof.

Beck was already moving, but I put a hand on his chest.

"Let him," I said.

"Lenox."

"Let him."

Roman looked out at all of us, and he cleared his throat.

"My name is Roman Haverill," he said. "I'm an actor. You know my movies. Mine opened third last weekend, and I think I deserved it."
