Chapter 17: Walking Out
Jessa got as far as the Range Rover in the courtyard before her legs stopped.
She stood with both hands flat on the hood and her forehead against the metal.
The engine was cold, and she could not feel it.
Footsteps came out of the door behind her, heavy and fast, and Joel's voice said, "Jess, don't turn around yet."
She turned anyway.
Rhys had come out of the building with Corin by the front of his jacket.
He did not say a word.
He shoved Corin against a stone pillar and hit him once across the face, hard enough that the sound rang off the courtyard wall.
Corin took it.
He did not lift his hands, and his head snapped sideways and came back.
"Rhys!" Joel shouted.
"Four weeks," Rhys said. His voice was low and shaking. "Four weeks you knew, and you stood in my kitchen. You ate at my table. You touched my sister."
"Yes, sir."
"Don't call me sir."
"Rhys." Corin wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "Hit me again if you want to. You've earned it. She hasn't."
Rhys's fist came up a second time.
Jethro got both arms around him from behind and lifted him off the ground.
"Not in front of the general's windows," Jethro said in his ear. "Captain. Not here. Please."
Rhys breathed hard, and slowly the fight went out of his shoulders.
Along the balcony above them, two sentries watched with no expression at all.
"Get in the car," Rhys said. "All of you."
Nobody spoke on the drive back.
Jessa sat in the front seat with the box of sandwiches on her knees, and she did not open it.
Corin rode in the van with Emmett, and she did not look in the mirror.
She was not thinking about the saw.
She had expected the saw to be the thing that came back, and it was not.
