They Sent a Knight to Fetch Me, I Kidnapped Him First novel · Chapter 23 of 24
Chapter 23: The Royal Dance Lesson
The summons reached the east gate with the rain, and Caedrin decided to refuse only one of them.
A page held it out from under a dripping hood.
It was sealed in crimson wax and stamped BY ORDER.
Caedrin read it twice under the guardhouse eave.
It told him to report to the ballroom at the fourth bell to learn a dance as the princess's partner.
"I have not been consulted," he said.
"No, Sir Caedrin," said the page.
"The steward wrote it."
"He says it saves time."
Caedrin handed the paper back.
"Please tell the steward I decline to be summoned," he said.
"And that I would like a different kind of paper."
The page ran off through the rain with the look of a boy who had waited years to carry such a message.
An hour later a second note came to the gate, folded small and tied with a green ribbon.
The handwriting was Seravelle's, and the ink was smudged where she had crossed something out.
It asked whether he would like to learn the dance with her.
It said he might say no.
