Ansel's POV

The nurse called me on Tuesday at six in the morning, and she did not say hello.

"Josu Etcheverry was on my porch at five last night," she said.

"He had a lawyer with him, a young one in a good coat, and a check."

I sat up on the edge of my grandmother's mattress.

Maite lay asleep behind me with one arm under the pillow.

I took the phone out to the front room.

"How much?" I said.

"He didn't say.

"He folded it so I couldn't see.

"He said I had been confused and had taken a kind act too far, and that a woman my age shouldn't carry around a paper she didn't understand."

"What did you say?"

"I said I understood it perfectly," the nurse said.

"I said I'd carried it five years in a coffee tin and I had no plans to put it down.

"Then I shut the door on his foot."

I laughed, once, before I could stop myself.

"Ansel," she said.

"I have the original of the Sacramento letter, with the lab's raised seal.

"I gave the girl the copy.

"I want that one in a place the Etcheverrys can't reach, and I do not trust the sheriff, who plays cribbage with Josu on Thursdays."

"I'll take it," I said.

"To who?"

"The district attorney," I said.

"The one who prosecuted her."

"Yes.

"He'll want to hear he was lied to.

"And if he doesn't, he'll want to hear it before somebody else does."

I drove to her house at eight.
