Chapter 23: First Snow on the Range
The order to vacate came on a Friday, as the district attorney had promised.
It was a single sheet with a judge's signature and the county seal.
It said the conviction of Maite Etcheverry for arson and manslaughter was set aside in its entirety.
I read it standing in the courthouse lobby with Ansel on my left and the nurse on my right.
The judge had come down off the bench to give it to me.
She was an old woman with a hoarse voice and thick glasses, and she took my hand in both of hers.
"The county owes you five years," she said.
"It will not be able to pay them."
"I know," I said.
"A claim will follow," the judge said.
"I'd advise you to make it."
"I will," I said.
"For the widow's daughter's school."
The judge looked at me for a long moment.
"Yes," she said.
"I would too."
That was October.
In December it snowed on Ruby Valley in the night, a foot of dry white powder.
By morning the black slab of the barn was a white rectangle with a brick chimney standing up out of it.
I drove down in Ansel's new truck, which the co-op had helped him buy after the sheriff's office paid him for the tires.
He drove with his hands at ten and two, and I held a thermos on my knee.
"You don't have to go in," he said.
"I know," I said.
"The treasurer said she'd send the keys with a deputy."
"I want to see it once," I said.
He turned up the ranch road.
The white house stood under the mountains with smoke coming from the chimney and a sheepdog barking in the yard.
