Chapter 13: Penhallow's Writ
Gwen's POV
Nobody in the Hall breathed.
I stood in the doorway of the great room with my cropped hair dripping on a borrowed collar, and three hundred boys looked at me.
Some of them did not understand yet.
The older ones did.
I saw it travel down the benches from the masters' dais to the back wall.
Heads turned and mouths closed.
The Crown's daughter.
The one who had struck out her own name.
The one who had been the quiet cousin from the northern valley for three weeks, and eaten at their tables.
"My lord Penhallow," said the Warden, in his dry old voice. "You name a student on my roll as a woman."
"I name the Crown's daughter," Rhodri said. "She is the one standing at your door."
He smiled at me again.
It was a pleasant smile, and it did not touch his eyes.
"Come in, Gwenllian," he said. "No one will hurt you here. My sons will see to that."
Behind him, on the third-year bench, the two Penhallow sons were already on their feet.
The older one looked as though somebody had given him a birthday.
I walked down the aisle.
It was the longest walk of my life.
I made it with my chin up and my fists loose.
The whole school was watching, and I knew what they would see if I ran.
I stopped at the foot of the dais.
"I am Gwenllian Treharne," I said, loud enough for the back benches. "My father is Madoc, the Crown of the nine packs. I am here under the name I wrote myself."
