Chapter 17: The Bill

I had planned it for two days, in Cleo's dorm room, on graph paper.

I took an envelope from my cardigan pocket.

"Noreen," I said into the microphone. "May I see your ledger?"

"You may not."

"Then I'll read mine."

I held up the envelope.

"This is a cashier's check from the Ashmont Federal Credit Union. It is made out to Roland and Noreen Brubaker for one hundred eighty-seven thousand four hundred dollars."

The hall went quiet.

"That is the exact total of the invoice my aunt read on the quad a month ago. I'm paying it in full. Rent. Food. Coats. Two sets of braces I never had. Every line."

Noreen's mouth fell open.

"I don't want to owe you a cent," I said. "I wanted it in writing, in front of people, that the account is closed and I paid it."

I walked down the stage steps and put the envelope on the arm of her chair.

She didn't touch it.

She stared at it.

I walked back up.

"Now I'd like to read mine," I said.

I took a sheet of graph paper out of my other pocket.
