Chapter 14: Together

Eden's POV

"You signed for me," I said.

Cormick put the pen down.

"Yes."

"That was the one thing. I said it to your face, and you agreed."

"I remember."

"Then why?"

"Davis moves his proxy this week or he doesn't." He did not look away. "I couldn't wait for you to wake."

"You could have woken me."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

His jaw worked.

"Because you'd have signed," he said. "You'd have signed because someone put a page in front of you."

I crossed the room and slapped the carbon copy flat against his chest.

"I am not that girl anymore."

"I know."

"Then stop deciding it for me."

"I will."

"You will not do it again. Not for a flood, not for a fire, not for the stairs. Not for me."

"Not again," he said. "Unless you say so, in words."

"In words, and I hold the pen."

"And you hold the pen."

I was shaking, and the anger had nowhere to go.

His hand lay open on the desk.

The scar in his eyebrow was a thin white line over eyes that did not defend themselves.

I had expected a fight. I had expected him to explain.

He had agreed with every word, and it made me angrier.

"Don't just stand there and take it," I said.

"What would you like me to do?"

"Argue."

"I'm in the wrong."

"You are," I said, "and you did it for me, which is worse."

His mouth moved, almost a smile.
