Chapter 21: Ask Me in Daylight
I did not speak to him for the whole drive home.
I sat in the passenger seat of his truck with my hands in my lap and my face turned to the black window.
I listened to the tires on the highway.
He drove with both hands on the wheel.
He did not try to explain, and he did not apologize.
The heat in the cab was on low.
I could feel him beside me like a stove.
"You said not yet," I said at last, outside Abbeville.
"Yes," he said.
"I asked you for the thing you've been waiting five weeks to be asked."
"I know," he said.
"And you said not yet."
"Odile," he said.
"I'm not asking you why," I said.
"I want you to know I heard it.
"And I want you to know I'm going to make you pay for it."
He did not look at me.
His knuckles were white on the wheel.
"Yes, ma'am," he said, very quiet.
"Pull over," I said.
He pulled over.
It was the shell road at the end of the levee, a mile short of the house.
The cut cane stood on both sides and the stars hung thick over the stubble.
He shut off the engine.
I turned in the seat and looked at him in the dash light.
"Take off your tie," I said.
He took it off.
"Give it to me."
I wound it around my hand.
Then I leaned over and took his wrists, one at a time, and crossed them in his lap and tied them.
It was not tight.
I did not need it to be.
He looked down at his own hands, and then at me, and I felt the whole truck go still.
"You can get out of that whenever you want," I said.
"I know," Seb said.
"Do you want to?" I said.
"No," he said.
"Good," I said.
"Now sit there.
"Don't move, and don't say a word."
