Chapter 21: Massimo's POV

Massimo's POV

The Don's housekeeper served lunch in the front room of the townhouse, and no one touched it.

Aurelio sat at the head of the table with his cane across his knees.

Fiora sat on his right.

I sat on her right, and I had never been so aware of my own hands.

"Eat," said the Don. "It will be cold before I finish."

Fiora picked up her fork and put it down again.

"Nonno. What is the question?"

He looked at her, and then at me.

"Twenty years ago I gave Massimo's father my granddaughter and a boat," he said. "His son has spent the years since looking for her. He found her. I owe him a debt I cannot pay."

"You owe him nothing," I said.

"Be quiet, boy."

I was thirty-three and I closed my mouth.

"The old families have asked me to name an heir," said Aurelio. "They will not wait long. They want her in the seat by the end of the month."

"I know," Fiora said.

"They also want a hand beside it. The old rule is that a Ruggieri heir marries into the family's right hand. I told them I would ask the right hand."

He looked at me.

"Massimo Greco. Will you marry my granddaughter?"

The room was very quiet.

I had said the answer to this question in my head so many times that I could hear it.

It was the answer I had given him in the study, the night he arrived.

I could feel Fiora not looking at me.
