Chapter 10: Out

The east stair was black, and I went down it with one hand on the wall.

At the bottom the iron door stood in front of me, rusted brown.

The key turned on the second try, with a groan I felt in my teeth.

Then I was out on a stone landing in the rain, with the sea slapping the steps and no light anywhere.

A skiff rode on a short chain.

The padlock opened for the same key.

I had never rowed in my life.

I learned in the first ten minutes, with my palms tearing open on the oars and the headland sliding past me, black on black.

I did not look back at the house.

I pulled until my arms shook, and the lights of the harbor came up over the water one by one.

It took the whole hour Darius had promised, and I came in sideways against the pilings of the ferry dock with my teeth chattering and my cardigan soaked through.

I tied the boat to a ring, and I could not feel my fingers.

I climbed the ladder onto the planks and stood there, free.

Nobody had followed me.

The dock was empty and lit by one yellow lamp, and a sign said the first ferry left at five.

I said it out loud, to see if it was true.

"I'm out."

My voice sounded very small.

The city was only a few streets away.

I could walk to my apartment, I thought, and then I remembered the note Silas had sent to my landlord.

I had no phone, no wallet, no shoes, and no coat.

I had a bakery that believed I had quit and a mother four states away who thought I was on vacation.
