Chapter 13: Her Rules

We dressed in the dark without a word.

The kitchen was warm from the stove, and I went straight to the flour bin.

My hands needed a job.

I measured water, salt and yeast into the big steel bowl, and I started to knead.

Darius sat at the long table in a clean shirt, with his back against the wall, because the gauze would not let him sit any other way.

He watched me work.

"Silas is at the council," I said. "I told him to stay on the dock."

"Eli says you did."

Eli had come in a few minutes ago, wet to the knees.

He had told us Silas crawled off the end of the pier on his hands, and the moment the car lights took me out of sight, he stood up.

"Your word is weaker with every yard you put between you and it," Eli had said. "He's not stronger than you. He's just far enough away."

I pushed the heel of my hand into the dough.

"Tell me what you're afraid of," I said.

Darius did not answer at once.

"You asked me tonight whether the rule was still the rule," he said. "I'm afraid it's the only true thing I ever said to you."

"That's not an answer."

"I'm afraid you said yes tonight because of what you are." He kept his eyes on the table. "That tomorrow you will look back at the soup and the spoon and my hand on your back, and you will see Silas's plan in every one. That you will be right to."

I stopped kneading.

"And I'm afraid," he said, lower, "that he was right about me. A man of my temper. I never learned to be anything except the one at the door."

"Do you want to know what I thought?"

"Yes."

"I thought you liked it." My voice came out flat. "I thought you stood in the lot with your hands in your pockets and you liked watching me be scared. That's why I couldn't eat your bread."
