Chapter 15: The Seat He Gave Up

Darius's POV

The council had not waited for dusk.

Six cars stood in the courtyard when I reached the stairs, and the long hall was already full.

I stopped at the top and buttoned my shirt, and my hands were not quite steady.

They had been steady for fifteen years.

Mara came out of the corridor behind me with her hair still damp and her cardigan buttoned wrong, and she looked up at me.

"Tell me what you're going to do," she said.

"Something I should have done at the van."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the one I have."

She almost smiled, and she fixed her buttons herself, and she walked down the stairs beside me.

She did not take my arm.

I was glad of it.

The hall smelled of wet wool and wax.

Eleven heads of families sat along the oak table with their hands folded, and the thin elder sat among them with his paper.

Silas stood at the head of the table in his grey suit, rested and cold.

He did not look at Mara.

He looked at me.

At the right hand of the head chair stood the second chair, the one with the iron arms.

It had been mine since I was twenty-one.

My father had sat in it, and his father before him, and every man in the room knew what it meant.

The one who sat there would be Alpha when the old one went.

"Darius," Silas said. "You're late."

"I was occupied."

A man down the table coughed, and nobody laughed.

"The council has heard my petition," Silas said, to the room. "The Seat is twenty-seven years old and has spent her whole life unable to shift. She was frightened enough last night to command a dock. She is a danger to herself and to the pack. I ask that she be made a ward of this family, under the care of a Kade, until the hall can hear her word."
