Chapter 6: The Van

Darius's POV

The doctor stitched my ribs at four in the morning and asked no questions.

He never did.

He had treated the Kade family for thirty years.

The only safe thing to say in this house was the dosage.

When he was gone I sat in the study with the green lamp on and my shirt in a bucket, and I did not sleep.

The wound did not keep me awake.

Her hands did.

She had knelt in front of me with her face white and her fingers shaking, and she had pressed the bandage to my side hard, to stop the bleeding.

She had not looked at my face once.

I had made myself look at the wall.

At six the door opened, and Eli came in without knocking.

He had a bandage of his own on his right hand, where she had bitten him, and he held it a little away from his body.

"Ronan's telling everyone he fell," Eli said. "He's told Silas. Silas knows he didn't."

"Good."

"Silas wants to see you at nine." Eli shut the door. "Darius, what are you doing?"

"My job."

"Your job was to bring her here. That's done."

He sat on the edge of the desk.

"Now you've broken a cousin's arm over her. I've known you my whole life, and you don't do things to be seen."

I said nothing.

Eli waited.

I had always been able to say hard things to him, because he was the one of us who listened.

"Ronan was going to go for her," I said. "Silas gave him the list."

"What list?"

"Of women we'd bring in. He had four on it." I turned the pen on the blotter. "Her name was third. Ronan wanted to be the one who brought her. He was going to do it in his own way."
