Chapter 11: What You Threw Away

"You turned down Harvard?"

My father said it so softly that I almost thought I had misheard.

"On the train," I said. "The day it came out. At 5:04."

"But why?"

"Why would you do that?" my mother burst out. "Laney. Harvard. For a school in California?"

"For a free one."

"It's free here too, with aid. We could have found a way."

"You told me in January the fund was Camille's."

She flinched.

Holden's father put the application form down, slowly.

At the far end of the table, one of the other diners had stopped chewing.

I did not raise my voice.

I had decided on the way over that I would not.

"Harvard's aid package," I said, "left us a contribution of forty-one thousand dollars a year. You said you wouldn't pay it, Dad. You said you'd moved the savings to Camille, and that I'd be fine with scholarships. You said I'd always been independent."

"We were trying to be fair."

"I found a scholarship. It's the Aldridge. It pays for everything. Room, board, a stipend, four years."

"You never told us," my mother whispered.

"I did tell you. In December, I told you in the kitchen, and you said, 'Not now, honey. Camille is having a hard month. Keep it in a drawer.'"

She opened her mouth.

I watched it come back to her.

I watched it arrive on her face, the kitchen, the dishcloth, the word drawer, and her mouth closed.

"I kept it in the drawer," I said. "I kept it for four months. On the train, the day they decided, I was sitting across the aisle from my boyfriend and my sister, who were laughing. He told me to sit over there and watch something."
