Chapter 20: Move-In Day
Move-in day at Stanford had volunteers in orange shirts, and every one of them wanted to carry something.
Flynn had a mini-fridge on his shoulder and a box of my books in his arms.
"You're showing off," I said.
"I'm a mechanical engineer. This is the entire job."
My roommate, a tall girl from Ohio with a ukulele case, had already claimed the bed by the window and was apologizing for it.
I told her I didn't care which bed I got.
It was true.
I hadn't known you could say that and mean it.
The dorm had a courtyard in front, with a fountain and a long banner over the entrance gate.
WELCOME, CLASS OF 2030.
The families stood around in the sun, hugging and arguing about drawers.
I was standing at the courtyard gate with a laundry basket when I heard my mother's voice.
"There she is!"
I did not turn around.
I knew the voice from forty feet away.
"Delaney! Honey! We're here!"
They had flown in that morning.
They came across the courtyard with a rolled comforter in plastic and a grocery store sheet cake in a white box.
