Chapter 22: The Wall
Aldridge Hall has a three-story atrium, and on the north wall there is a sheet of dark brass as wide as a bus.
Every Aldridge Scholar since the program began has a name on it.
Beside each name is one line from the essay that won.
On the third Saturday in November, a dean in a green scarf stood under it with a microphone and two hundred folding chairs.
I stood to the side with Flynn, in the black dress Jo had mailed me, holding a program I had read four times.
"You didn't say no," he said, low.
"I thought about it."
"And?"
"I decided it was my wall."
He squeezed my hand, once, hard.
I found my parents in the last row by the doors.
They sat close together without touching, in their good coats.
Mom had a program in her lap, and Dad was looking at his shoes.
I had told the office to seat them, and not to seat them with me.
They had not tried to come over.
The dean welcomed the families, and thanked the donors, and began reading names.
