Chapter 8: No Snoring

The deputy left at four, with a statement and a bag of the man's dropped lock picks.

Cal went out to the garage to ice his lip.

I stayed in the kitchen, pretending to look for tea, until the window began to turn gray.

Devin was sitting at the table when I turned around.

He had a mug in front of him that he hadn't touched.

"You should be asleep," I said.

"So should you."

"I'm not tired."

"No." He turned the mug a quarter turn. "I don't think you ever were."

I put the box of tea down.

"Devin."

"I said I'd tell you. I've been trying to since the funeral. I'm going to say it fast, and then you can throw something."

I stood with my hands on the back of a chair.

"You haven't snored once," he said.

The room went very quiet.

"Your mother said you snored loud enough to rattle the pictures. She said it was the funniest thing about you. She had a recording on her phone."

I said nothing.

"The first night, Cal timed you with his watch. He was standing over you for ten minutes. You didn't make a sound."

"People don't always..."

"Not you. Not on that couch, with the afghan, on the one day you'd had no sleep." He looked at me for the first time. "Tonight your breath changed every time Cal touched your leg. I'm a paramedic. I know what a sleeping body does. I know what yours was doing."

My face was on fire.
