Chapter 14: Jonas Sits Still

Jonas's POV

I heard her voice from the top of the stairs.

It was coming out of Seidl's phone in the front hall, and it was saying what she had said to us in the dark, hours before dawn.

I took the stairs three at a time.

Seidl saw me coming and did not step back.

He smiled and held the phone a little higher.

I was close enough to smell his cologne when she said my name.

"Jonas."

She stood by the kitchen door in her jeans with her hair sticking up on one side.

"Don't," she said.

I had my fist cocked, and I did not lower it.

"He recorded you," I said. "Through a wall. In your bed."

"I know what he did."

"I'm going to put him through the front door."

"No."

"Verena."

"Nobody decides for me," she said, flat and quiet. "That includes you. That includes this."

My arm shook.

Seidl stopped the recording and slipped the phone into his breast pocket.

"Hit me, Herr Eder," he said pleasantly. "My driver is waiting in the snowcat with a camera. A fight would make a fine second file."

I looked at the window.

A man in a grey jacket sat behind the wheel in the yard, and he did not look away.

"What do you want?" Verena asked.

"What I always wanted. Five signatures."

"You'll have none."

"Then on Saturday the village holds its ski festival." Seidl straightened his cuffs. "The mayor has promised me the speakers for a short announcement. The valley will hear forty minutes of the fifth owner of Haus Brandl, and a copy goes to the festival committee and the priest."

I wanted to pull his teeth out one at a time.
