Chapter 6: She Repeats Every Word

I walked into the kitchen at eleven with my hair still wet and my jaw set.

Stefan was at the stove.

Jonas sat on the counter with a mug in both hands.

Felix stood by the window and would not meet my eyes, because he had left my room twenty minutes earlier with his shirt buttoned wrong.

Tobias was nowhere.

"Morning," Stefan said. "Better?"

"Much better."

I took a mug from the shelf and filled it at the pot.

Then I turned and looked at Jonas.

"'Then she wakes up, and we find out what she does,'" I said.

The mug stopped halfway to his mouth.

"You said that," I told him. "Last night, with your mouth on me."

Nobody made a sound.

"'Look at her nipples,'" I said, and turned to Stefan. "'She doesn't know what she likes.' That was you."

Stefan put down the spoon.

"You were awake," he said.

"The whole time. The first night too."

"Verena," Felix said.

"I know," I told him. "You told them. Nobody listened."

Jonas went red from his collar to his hairline.

He set the mug down on the counter and did not say a word.

For the first time since I had known him, the blunt one had nothing to say.

I leaned against the table with my arms crossed.

"I let you," I said. "I want that said first. I could have opened my eyes at any second, and I didn't."

"Why?" Stefan asked.

"Because for three days you talked around me, and I wanted to hear what you actually said."

"And?"

"And you said plenty."

Stefan laughed.

It started low and got louder, and he put the back of his wrist against his mouth and shook his head.
