Chapter 21: Mic Check
The arena went quiet in a wave, from the ice to the roof.
Lev stood on one leg at the Kings' blue line with the microphone shaking in his fist.
The scoreboard camera had him in thirty-foot letters.
"I'm Lev Vasko," he said. "Some of you know me from my stream."
A few people laughed, and it died fast.
"I'm going to say something once, and I'm not going to take it back."
He did not look at the owner's box.
"This season, before it began, Luca Brescia fell down a flight of stairs in his building and broke his leg."
Luca, at the Anvils' bench, went still.
"He didn't fall," Lev said. "I pushed him."
A groan went through the crowd.
"My father told me to. He said the Anvils would fold without Luca, and that it was one push and nobody would know."
His voice cracked.
"His man wiped the camera in that building. I deleted my own photo. Mara Brescia found it anyway, and I let the league call it a picture of a staircase."
He wiped his face on his shoulder.
"There's more. My father's holding company bought the Brescias' bank loan in July, before any of this. He pulled the sponsors one by one, because he wanted the loan called and the team in his hands."
"Lev," someone said, far off.
"He never wanted a title," Lev said. "He wanted the Anvils' name on a building he owned. And he wanted to prove to himself that Aldo Brescia was a fraud."
He looked up, finally, at the owner's box.
"I'm sorry, Dad. I did it all for you, and it was never enough."
Nobody moved.
Then the glass of the owner's box slammed open.
