Chapter 10: What He Kept
They talked in the kitchen, because it was the only room where neither of them had stood in the dark.
Seo-jun put on a shirt.
He made no tea and sat across the steel counter from her with his hands flat.
Outside the window the sky was going from grey to a thin pink.
"My father was Han Dae-sung," he said. "He was a partner in the hotel group with the chairman. He put money into the Busan hotel when it was one building and a dream. The strike that year was about wages, and the kitchen staff stayed in to cook for the guests anyway because they were loyal to him."
Ye-rin said nothing.
"I was eight. I had been put in a suite on the sixth floor with a nanny, and in the night I woke up and the room was full of smoke."
He touched his left forearm.
"The door handle was hot. I wrapped my sleeve around it and the sleeve burned. The nanny was gone. I found the service stairs by the kitchen because they smelled of food, and I went down them."
His voice was quite flat.
"At the bottom there was a corridor. At the end of the corridor there was a steel door with a chain on the outside. It was shaking. People were hitting it from the other side."
She felt cold from her scalp to her heels.
"There was a woman standing between me and the door. She was young and wearing a head cap. She had a baby on her shoulder."
"No," said Ye-rin.
"The baby was blue around the mouth." Seo-jun did not look away from her. "She looked at the door. She looked at me. She turned around and carried the baby out the front way, and she did not shout, and she did not call anyone to help."
