The pain started in the elevator on the way down from Da-hee's floor.

Ye-rin had the grey folder against her ribs, and she had not opened it.

Da-hee had made her promise.

"Not in my house," she had said. "Please. Read it where you're safe."

Between the fourteenth floor and the lobby, something tightened behind her breastbone along the line of the old scar.

She leaned on the mirrored wall.

Her hands went cold to the wrist.

She got her phone out and called him because she could not think of anyone else.

He came fast, with the car left across a fire lane, and found her on a bench in the lobby with her head down.

He did not ask.

He put his coat around her and walked her out with one hand under her elbow.

The cardiologist was a woman in her sixties who kept her clinic open late for the Ryu family.

She did not look up when Seo-jun brought a stranger through the door.

She put Ye-rin on a bed and spread cold gel over her chest and pressed a probe into the hollow beneath her breast.

On the dark monitor a grey heart beat in a grey fan.

"Hm," said the doctor.

Ye-rin looked at Seo-jun.

He stood at the foot of the bed with his arms folded and his face set, and he did not look at the screen.
