Chapter 30: What It Cost

Three days after the memorial, they went to the hill above the harbor.

The ruined lot was swept now.

Somebody had cut the weeds back.

The families had laid white chrysanthemums on the ground where the service corridor had run, eleven bunches and a twelfth beside them for a man who had died in the lobby.

Seo-jun stood in front of the flowers with his hands in his coat pockets.

Ye-rin stood a little behind him, and her mother stood beside her.

The wind came up off the sea and smelled of salt and winter.

Sun-hee stepped forward.

She was wearing the blue dress under her good wool coat, and she walked past Ye-rin and stopped in front of Seo-jun.

Then she knelt.

She did it slowly, on the cold ground, with her hands flat on her thighs.

"Ajumma," said Seo-jun.

"I will say this once, kneeling," said Sun-hee. "I was thirty years old and I held my child and I let you pass, a boy with his sleeve on fire, and I did not call anyone. I have looked at your face in my kitchen for twenty years and I could not say it."

"Please get up."

"I am not asking you to forgive me. I do not think I can be forgiven." She raised her eyes. "I am telling you that I saw you, and that I am sorry. I am sorry."
