Chapter 6: The Tea Room
The tea room of the Ryu house had a floor of warm cedar and six women kneeling on silk cushions.
Ye-rin knew them all by sight.
They were the wives who came to the Sunday charity lunches, and she had refilled their cups in this room since she was fourteen.
None of them looked at her now as she crossed the threshold in her grey dress.
Madam Gu sat at the head of the low table with a pot of green tea in front of her, and she did not rise.
"Miss Baek," she said. "Please. Sit."
There was a cushion set apart, at the foot, where the servant who poured would kneel.
Ye-rin walked to the middle of the table and sat on the cushion nearest the guests.
A woman in lavender drew in her knees.
"How kind of you to come," said Madam Gu. "I wanted my friends to hear this from me. It would be unfair to let rumor do the work."
She lifted a long white envelope from beside her teapot and laid it on the table.
"There are three hundred million won in a cashier's cheque," she said. "It is a great deal more than the brooch. It is enough to take a young woman and her mother somewhere quiet. Busan, perhaps. Jeju. I'm told the air is good."
"You want me to leave Seoul."
"I want you to leave Seo-jun."
The women had stopped pretending to sip.
"Be sensible," said Madam Gu. "He is playing with you. He has a fiancée waiting, a family waiting. In three months you will be a story that servants tell. Take the money and make something of it. Let your mother retire with dignity."
