Chapter 6: The Wire Is Not Coming

The Thayer Holdings boardroom is on the fourth floor of a glass building in Hartford.

It has a long walnut table, seven leather chairs on each side and a view of the river.

On the morning of the 30th I walked in at one minute to ten, beside my grandmother's lawyer.

He carried the file in both arms.

I wore the navy dress again, with my grandmother's ring on my right hand.

Seven directors sat on the far side of the table with pens and legal pads.

Margaret sat at the head with her back to the window.

Colin sat to her right, white-faced, with a stack of signature pages in front of him.

Brandy was not there.

A company lawyer stood up and started to speak, and then stopped.

"Laurel," Margaret said coldly. "This is a closing. It isn't a place for family business."

"I'm not here for family business," I said.

I pulled out a chair at the foot of the table and sat down.

"I'm here for Pinegate," I said.

Nobody said anything.

Colin laughed, one short laugh.

"Laurel, what are you talking about?"

"This is Ms. Talcott," my grandmother's lawyer said. He set the file on the table and opened it to the first page. "She is the sole owner of Pinegate Fund, LLC. The transfer of ownership was completed on December 24th, and the documents are right here for anyone's counsel to examine."

The company lawyer took the page.

He read it. He read it again.

Then he turned it over to check whether there was anything on the back.

"It's in order," he said in a small voice. "This is real. The fund is hers."

One of the directors, an older man with a red tie, put his pen down.

Margaret didn't move.

She looked at me for a very long time.

"You're a bookkeeper," she said.

"Yes," I said. "I kept my grandmother's books on weekends, and I did them correctly. That's why she trusted me."
