Chapter 29: Keep the House
Six hundred people turned in their chairs to look from my sister to me.
Marigold stood in the doorway with her chin up, waiting for the fight.
I could have given her one.
Company money had heated and staffed and mowed that house for thirty years.
I could have started that fight in the morning.
"Keep it," I said.
Marigold's smile faltered.
"It's in your name," I said. "It's yours. The company stopped paying for it at five o'clock."
She opened her mouth. Nothing came out.
She'd come to the doorway to win something, and I'd handed it to her, and she didn't know what to do with her hands.
She turned and went out into the hall, and the doors swung shut on her.
Two Saturdays later, my father asked me to come to Briarwood.
He didn't call. He wrote me a letter, on his old company stationery, by hand.
Iris. The carriage house. Saturday at ten. I'd like to ask you for something.
I drove up the valley in the rain.
The lawn hadn't been mowed. The leaves were down in the pool, a brown skin on the water, because nobody had put the cover on.
