They Wanted My Haunted House, I Let Everyone Leave novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Velvet Rope
Hester removes her aunt's rope, accepts the dusk key and invites her cousin as five house rules awaken.
My aunt brought a velvet rope to keep me out of my inheritance.
She'd hooked it between two umbrella stands in the entrance hall.
A handwritten sign said PRIVATE FAMILY TOUR.
I stood on the wrong side with my overnight bag.
"You're late," Elaine said.
"It's my house."
"Then you should have been here to organize things."
She lifted the rope for my cousin Pippa and lowered it again before I could follow.
Pippa stopped beneath the stairs.
"She's carrying the key," she said.
"Someone has to," my aunt replied.
At thirty-one, I knew how quickly my family could turn an advantage into a duty.
I kept hold of the envelope from the solicitor.
It contained directions, an inheritance notice, and no useful advice about velvet ropes.
My grandmother had left me the ancestral house without consulting the relatives who'd already divided it.
I'd come to look at it before deciding anything.
The photographs had shown deep windows, a large kitchen, and a room where I could shut my own door.
I wanted those things badly enough to forgive the peeling paint.
I hadn't expected to negotiate for a place beside its washing machine.
Elaine had come with printed labels for the bedrooms.
She indicated a narrow door near the back of the hall.
"We've saved you a room beside the washing machine."
"You haven't unpacked mine yet," Pippa said.
My aunt gave her the patient look reserved for younger women who interrupted arrangements made on their behalf.
I unhooked the rope.
One umbrella stand toppled against the other.
A collection of antique walking sticks rattled down the tiles.
Elaine reached for her sign before anything valuable could touch it.
"I'll choose my own room," I said.
"Pippa, you're welcome to stay if you want."
My cousin glanced at the back door and then at me.
"I do," she said.
That pleased me more than the deed in my envelope.
I'd spent too many family weekends being allotted the folding bed after everyone else chose.
I wanted her first answer here to count.
A brass key hung on a hook beside the door.
Its head was shaped as the house's steep roof, with a window cut through the metal.
The envelope said it fitted every inside lock.
I took it down as the last light left the hall windows.
The door closed behind me without anyone touching it.
Elaine turned toward the draught.
"There'll be work to do on these hinges."
The key warmed in my palm.
Beneath its hook, a card slipped out from the wooden paneling.
Pippa picked it up before my aunt could put a bedroom label over it.
"House rules," she said.
I read them aloud because nobody else was going to wait.
"Whoever accepts the house key at dusk is host until sunrise."
Elaine asked whether there was a separate card for the boiler.
I continued.
"Only the host may offer a room or hand over something of the house; a guest may refuse."
Pippa looked toward her room label.
"Taking an unoffered thing binds the taker to the house; returning it unbroken frees them."
The next sentence sat beneath it in the same numbered box.
"A broken thing binds them until the key is returned at sunrise."
My aunt stopped sorting her labels.
"The host must grant a guest's requested departure," I read.
The final rule had been pressed so firmly into the card that I could feel its letters.
"At sunrise the host keeps the house and everyone bound to it, or returns the key to its hook and releases them all."
The key's warmth spread into my fingers.
I didn't like the word everyone.
Pippa moved closer to me.
Elaine took the card, examined its blank back, and returned it.
"Your grandmother did enjoy a theme."
I put my aunt's PRIVATE sign on the umbrella stand she'd rescued.
"Then we can start with choosing our own rooms."
From the empty stairwell, a hand reached out and politely lifted the velvet rope.
