Rupert called my name before the sunlight reached the hook.
I turned with the brass key still in my hand.
"I shouldn't have broken the bell," he said.
Pippa stood as far as her fixed shoe allowed.
He looked at her instead of waiting for me to make his apology easier.
"I'm sorry."
"You shouldn't have hit it while I was holding it," she said.
His face tightened.
For a moment I thought he would argue about the difference.
Then he nodded.
My cousin sat down again.
It hadn't freed her foot or restored the bell, but she had made him say what he'd done.
I wanted her out of that house before he found another reason she ought to comfort him.
The eastern window brightened.
A narrow gold edge crossed the top of the rules card.
