Chapter 19: The Bath
I said nothing about the Return.
I thought about it the whole way home, in the saddle, with Bastian riding beside me and the Plaza Guard clattering behind.
I thought about it while he handed me down from the grey in the courtyard.
I thought about it in the hall, where the new hound puppy he had bought me tumbled across the flagstones.
It bit the hem of my ball gown.
My own bed. My own door. My own world, with its warm bathtub and its bad coffee and its billing codes.
Thirty-three years of it.
[Midnight. Forty minutes.]
I swallowed hard and turned around, and Bastian was watching me.
"You're quiet," he said.
"It's been a night."
"Come."
He took my hand.
He led me through the kitchen and down a narrow stair I had not been on before.
The stair opened into a long low tiled room under the house, hot as summer and full of steam.
The bathhouse.
It was old, Valdoran, with a green-tiled pool in the middle as big as a small pond.
Oil lamps burned in niches in the wall.
Warm water lapped at the steps.
