Chapter 23: The Wedding Night

He kept his word about the table.

The long oak table in the dining room of the house on the Street of Lamps had been laid for a wedding supper.

Nobody had touched it.

Candles. White linen. A silver dish of lemon cakes, a dozen of them, stacked in a pyramid.

The housekeeper had left them there, with a note, and gone to bed.

I stood in the doorway in the cream satin with the lace yoke, my veil half off and my feet bare.

Bastian shut the door behind us and locked it.

"Three lemon cakes," he said. "You said you wanted three at your own wedding."

"I did," I said.

"Eat them," he said.

I looked at him.

He stood with his back to the door, tall and dark, with his collar open and the chain gone.

His eyes on me were hot and fixed.

I walked to the table and took a cake.

I ate it slowly, looking at him.

It was sweet and sharp, soft and cool, and I licked the sugar off my thumb.

His breathing changed.

I took a second one, and bit it in half, and held the other half out to him.

He crossed the room and took it from my fingers with his mouth, and his tongue swept over my thumb.
