Chapter 4: Delphine Brings Dinner

I woke in a narrow bed in Odette's back room with the half-signed form under my pillow.

I had read it over and over before I fell asleep.

Garrick L. And then that long black stroke.

At noon, a lookout whistled from the road, and Odette looked out the kitchen window and said, "Well, I never."

Delphine Sayre was walking across the sawmill yard with a covered dish in both hands.

She had on a cream sweater and her auburn braid over one shoulder, and she looked small among all those bearded men.

I went out onto the porch.

"Tilly!" she said, and nearly ran.

She set the dish on the rail and hugged me so hard my ribs creaked.

"I've been sick all night," she said into my hair. "I drove up as far as the gate and then I walked, because I didn't want to cause trouble. I brought chicken and rice. Nobody should be sleeping in a kitchen on a pack's charity."

"Delphine, you didn't have to."

"Of course I did."

She held me at arm's length and looked me over.

"You're pale. Are they feeding you? Did that Ketch man behave?"

"He's been fine."

"Good. I never trusted Iron Hollow, but I trust you."

She smiled, and I found I was smiling back.

I did not have many friends my own age, and she'd been one of them for six years.

Odette set out plates at the long kitchen table.

Dorian sat at the head of it and said nothing, and three of his men ate fast and watched Delphine over their forks.

Delphine told us all about the gossip at home.

Half the pack had been up past midnight, she said, and Garrick had left the Naming without speaking to anyone.
