Chapter 23: The Cell Door
I was on my feet before I knew I'd stood.
He was already fitting a key into the lock.
His hands were shaking so hard the ring rattled against the bars.
"Wrong one," he muttered. "Wrong one. Come on."
"Auden."
"I took them off the night guard. He's asleep in the chair at the top. I didn't hurt him."
"Auden, stop."
He tried another key.
It scraped and stuck.
I reached through the bars and closed my hand over his.
He went still.
His skin was hot. Mine was cold from the wall.
"Listen to me," I said.
"I'm getting you out. Then we'll listen to anybody you want."
"That's what he said."
He looked up.
In the dark his eyes were all gold, his wolf right there behind them.
"Who?"
"You. The old one. You came down those same forty steps with a guard's keys."
My voice went thin. I made it come back.
"You stood exactly where you're standing. You said exactly what you just said."
He stared at me.
"Then a guard came round that bend," I said. "And you fell against this door."
