Chapter 29: Pups
Auden was down on the step beside me before I'd finished.
He held my hair back with one hand and rubbed my back with the other.
"It's the climb," I said, when I could. "And no breakfast. And forty-one bottles."
"Probably."
He wasn't looking at me.
He leaned in close, his nose by my temple, and breathed in.
Slowly. Like he did with a patient on the ward.
Then he went completely still.
"What?" I said.
He didn't answer.
He breathed in again.
Through the bond something came off him so fast and bright I nearly sat down in the grass.
It wasn't one feeling. It was about nine.
"Auden. What?"
"Milk," he said. His voice cracked. "And warm bread. Under everything."
The temple steps went very quiet.
My father had stopped three steps above us. The twins had stopped. The second prince's mate had both hands over her mouth.
I looked at Auden.
"You're sure?"
"I'm a healer," he said. "Mostly."
"Get a card," I said.
He laughed, and it came out wet.
