Chapter 16: Family Business
By noon there were reporters on the stoop.
Four of them, then nine, with two vans double-parked on the street.
Mabel watched them from behind the living room curtain.
Linus watched them from behind her.
"They're sitting on the upstairs lady's recycling bins," he said.
"She's going to kill them."
"Probably," said Linus.
Fern had kept them home from school.
She read the column at the kitchen table twice, once out loud and once to herself.
Darla had been careful.
She never said a crime. She said "sources close to the family."
She said Hank Tully had no employer anyone could find.
She said one of the sons had burned down a garage and never been charged.
She said "people in this city know what the Tullys are."
She said she lay awake at night thinking about the little girl in that apartment.
There was nothing in it about bruises.
At four o'clock the cop brother came up the back fire escape in his uniform, carrying grocery bags.
At five the doctor came the same way, still in scrubs.
At six Grandpa's truck pulled into the alley behind the building, with the third brother hunched in the passenger seat in a hoodie.
"You're banned from the city," said Fern.
