Chapter 14: Best Offer
Christian came at four in the afternoon, and he knocked twice, politely.
Luther opened the door with a dish towel over his shoulder and did not move out of the frame.
"Mr. Rask," Christian said. "I'm not here for you. I'd like ten minutes with my wife."
"She's not in the hall," Luther said. "You'd have to ask her."
"Let him in," I said from the kitchen.
My voice was steadier than my knees.
Christian came down the hall in a gray overcoat with the black notebook in his hand.
He looked at the kitchen and nodded.
"This is good work," he said. "It's a warm room."
He set the notebook on the counter, squared it to the edge, and did not open it.
Luther stayed in the doorway with his arms folded.
"I read the letter you got," Christian said to me. "I'm sorry for the tone. Lawyers write like lawyers. I wanted you to hear the actual offer from me."
"Go ahead."
"The house is yours, in your name alone, with the mortgage paid off. Half of the royalties from the first printing, and half of everything after. The accounts are unfrozen this afternoon."
"And?"
"And you come to the launch as my guest, and you read the passage you wrote, the way it's printed. You stand beside me. You say a few words about what the method gave you."
"The method gave me a count."
"Emmy." He said my name softly. "I know how it looks from inside a bad week."
I said nothing.
He waited, because waiting was the tool he trusted most.
Then he put one more thing on the counter, and it was a single sheet, folded once.
