Chapter 22: Mind Matters
On Friday at ten in the morning we sat in Luther's truck outside Shanna's house with the radio on.
I had told Luther I did not want to listen.
He had not argued, and he had turned the key in the ignition anyway, and I had not asked him to turn it off.
Mind Matters came on with its little piano sting.
"Good morning, Madison," said the host. "We have a guest booked this hour, and I'll say right away that it's not a conversation I expected to be having."
I sat up.
"Dr. Christian Pelham is in the studio. He came in on time. I want to thank him for that, because he did not have to."
"Thank you for having me," said Christian, in his lovely, quiet voice.
"I watched your launch on Wednesday night," the host said. "All of it. And I have read the recovery chart your wife read out, and I've talked to two nurses and a lawyer, and I want to put one thing on the air before we begin."
"Of course."
"You have sat in that chair before and asked my listeners to be gentle with your wife."
"I did, yes. I was concerned."
"I'm not going to let you say her name warmly on my air again."
There was a pause.
"I'm sorry," Christian said.
"She was sedated. You signed her consent as her spouse.
"You took the words she wrote at night in a sketchbook and put them under your name."
The host's voice had gone flat and careful.
"I'd like you to tell my listeners what you think the word consent means."
"With respect, this is a very one-sided..."
