Chapter 9: Say Yes to the Shower
On Sunday afternoon I sat at Tucker's kitchen table with the lab report between us and a plate of toast neither of us ate.
His kitchen was small and tidy, with a night-shift calendar stuck to the fridge.
He had put the letter in a clear plastic sleeve, because he said evidence should be kept flat.
"I'll say it once," he said. "I think you should send this to a lawyer tomorrow and let the lawyer use it."
"I know."
"Your mother hit you in the street. She'll hit you again with words if you wait."
"I know that too."
"Then why are you looking at it like you want to keep it a secret?"
I turned the toast over on the plate.
"Because if I send it to a lawyer, it becomes a court paper," I said. "Preston will say I stole it. Daphne will say I forged it. My mother will believe them, because she wasn't willing to watch a video of her own daughter."
"The video is real."
"So is this. But my mother needs to see his face when he hears it."
Tucker leaned back.
"You want an audience."
"I want my mother in the same room as my husband, my sister and everyone from her church," I said. "Preston will say something big and loud about being a father. Then somebody will put this in front of him."
"That's cruel."
"Yes."
"I'm not saying don't," he said. "I'm saying I understand it."
I looked up, and he was almost smiling.
It was a small, crooked thing, and it did something to my chest that I filed away to think about later.
"Three weeks," I said. "My mother said she's giving Daphne a shower in three weeks."
