Chapter 11: Snow Day
The first snow came down on Thursday in the dark, and by seven the power on Lamphere Hill was gone.
I stood at the kitchen window in two sweaters, watching the road disappear.
The Stovepipe was closed.
The town had called off school, and Yvonne had called off the bread.
At half past nine Etienne's truck came up the hill with its chains clanking and ploughed into my yard.
He stood in my doorway shaking snow off his hat.
"Mémère says the roads are bad," he said. "She says somebody should check on the new clerk."
"Did she say you?"
"She said anybody. I was the only anybody."
I laughed and pulled him in by his coat.
The woodstove in the front room was going, because he had fixed it.
For the first time since I'd arrived, the house was warm in one place.
I had a couch pulled up close to it with a quilt on it, and a pot of soup on the iron top.
We ate on the couch with our bowls in our laps and the windows white.
Without the electric lights the room was brown and gold, and the stovepipe ticked as it heated.
