Chapter 10: The Library
I did not ask him about it that morning.
I let him sleep, and went to the washstand and dressed, and when he woke he found me at the table with the tide book open, writing sums.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he looked at the window and said nothing, and went to make the tea.
I let that stand.
I wanted a better question than "Who is Marian?" I wanted the question that would make the Ledge answer.
I found it in the library.
It lay on the floor below mine, behind a door that was never locked, and I had passed it forty times.
It was a long curved room that ran round the tower wall, shelved from floor to ceiling in black oak.
Ledgers stood in rows, and bound minutes, and the keepers' logs going back three hundred years.
A reading table ran down the middle under a lamp.
Ansel had told me I could come any time.
I came on a Wednesday, with a cup of tea and my account book, and I went straight to the shelf marked CHARTER.
