Chapter 12: The Fourth Clause

Dally's POV

Magnus came into the library with the key in his hand.

I was standing at the window, and I did not turn around.

"You saw it," I said.

"His shadow.

"I was at the glass.

"I saw you look at him, and I saw what you saw."

"Yes," Magnus said.

"What is he?"

"I will not tell you anything the charter has not let you read," he said.

"But I'll put it in your hands."

I turned around.

"Then give me the charter."

He crossed to the long table under the lamp.

He knelt, and pressed his palm to the underside of the boards, and something clicked.

A shallow drawer slid out of the oak.

He took out a book bound in black cloth and laid it on the table.

He set a flat bundle of letters tied in string beside it.

Last of all came a single loose leaf of yellow paper, folded in four.

"The fourth clause," he said.

"The true one.

"It was cut from the town's copy thirty years ago.

"My father put it in this drawer the night I was nine."

I sat down.

He stood across the table with his hands behind his back.

"Read it," he said.

"I will not say a word."

I unfolded the leaf.

It was the same round clerk's hand, the same ink.

It began in the middle of the sentence the town's copy stopped on.
