Chapter 14: No
I dressed at first light and wrapped my mother's letters in my scarf.
I put the diary in my coat, against my ribs, and the yellow leaf in the pocket of my account book.
The iron key I left on the tide table, where I would see it from the door.
I looked at the room once.
The brass button and the green sea glass sat on the sill, with a second button beside them, and a third.
I had collected a dozen buttons since the first night.
I took them all and put them in my pocket, and I did not examine why.
Then I turned the brass key in the inside lock and walked out.
Nobody was on the stair.
Nobody was in the library.
I went down past the kitchen, where the stove was ticking.
All three of them stood in a row at the foot of the stair, like men at a funeral.
Magnus, Rook, Ansel.
None of them had slept.
"I'm going to my father's yard," I said.
Rook opened his mouth.
"I'm not asking," I said.
"I'm telling you where I'll be.
"The last man who didn't tell me where I was going was the man who sent me here, and I don't intend to be him."
"The causeway shows at low tide," Magnus said.
