Chapter 18: The Church at Night
Ansel's POV
We ran the causeway with the tide turning white over the weed behind us.
I was the first up the dock steps, because I had the longest legs and the least to lose.
The oak door stood open.
Magnus had left it that way for Dally, and a man had walked through it.
Rook came up beside me with a knife in his hand.
I had never seen him draw it in anger.
"Quiet," Magnus said, from the foot of the stair.
We went up as the wind went up the stone, a breath at a time.
The library door was open.
Somebody had been in it, and had been careful, and had not found what he wanted.
What he wanted had lain in a drawer under the reading table where the oak showed no seam, and Dally had it in her coat.
A man stood at the table with his back to us.
He wore a dark coat and boots with a steel heel, and he was looking at the glass case that held the town's copy of the charter.
"That's far enough," Magnus said.
The man turned.
He was perhaps thirty, clean-shaven, with a clerk's pale hands, and he did not look surprised.
"Mr. MacNaughton," he said.
"Mr. Hemenway sends his regards.
"I'm to retrieve a book."
"You've come to a library," Rook said.
"You'll find we have several."
"The Keepers' log for thirty years ago," said the clerk.
"It was taken from the town's custody in error."
"It was cut from this shelf by your master," said Magnus.
"It is not on this shelf now," I said.
