Chapter 21: The Pew
Nobody ran.
I had expected a stampede.
I hung from the rafters with my wings open and my whole body ringing.
Below me two hundred and sixty people stood in their pews with their coats half on, and none of them moved.
They looked at a man in a camel coat with thirteen feet of black wing on his back.
They looked at the girl in the beams.
The room made no sound.
At the side door the driver turned the key a second time.
He was the thin young man in the steel-heeled boots.
He did it carefully, as a man locks up a shop.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Cyrus said.
He had not turned his head.
His wings were still spread, and his voice was still mild.
"I'm afraid you have seen a very unfortunate thing."
"We've seen you, Cyrus," said the old Grange woman.
She was on her feet in the third row with her handbag held to her chest.
"We've seen it."
"The girl is unwell," said Cyrus.
"She has been for some time.
"The Ledge has done something to her, and you can see what it does.
"It is why this town gives the Ledge a keeping, and why the keeping never comes back to church.
"That is what the MacNaughtons make of a woman."
He lifted one hand toward me.
It was a good gesture, and for a breath I saw two hundred and sixty faces turn toward the beams, uncertain.
I came down.
I came down in a long slow spiral with my wings folding, and set my feet on the boards in front of the clerk's table.
My boots rang.
I was in my own body again, in a wool coat with my braid come loose.
The black feathers fell off my arms and lay on the floor like burned paper.
I did not feel unwell.
I felt clear.
