Chapter 19: What Sponsors Do
The brand manager walked down the center aisle with the leather folder against her chest.
Nobody booed her.
Nine hundred phones followed her down the carpet instead.
She stopped at the foot of the stage, between Cormac and me, and held out her hand for the microphone.
Cecelia gave it to her without a word.
"Good evening," the brand manager said. "I'm from Northlight Jewelers, and I'll be brief."
"Please," Cormac said. "Let's not do this in public."
"You did the proposal in public, Mr. Eames. So did I."
A few people in the hall laughed, and then went quiet again.
"Hearthlight's contract with Northlight," she said, "has one condition in section nine. All creative work delivered under it must be the original work of the named creators."
"I've spent this week reading two files. One is the proposal speech Hearthlight delivered to us, and the other is a draft dated four years ago."
She opened the folder and held up two sheets of paper.
"They are the same speech. The first has Mr. Quill's name in the file history. The second has been signed for by Miss Hartwell as her own."
Cecelia closed her eyes.
"As of tonight," the brand manager said, "Northlight is terminating its campaign with Hearthlight for misrepresentation of authorship. We will not pay the balance, and we will be asking for the advance back."
"You can't do that," Cormac said, in a different voice, a flatter one. "We have a signed deal. We have a ring in the video."
