Chapter 4: Pine Ridge

The shoot was at Pine Ridge, three hours north, on a ski slope that the resort closed for us at dawn.

I got there at four with the crew van and set up the lights by flashlight.

Snow had fallen overnight, clean and flat, and the sun came up pink over the ridge exactly when the schedule said it would.

Cecelia wore a white wool coat and a pair of gloves she had chosen for how they photographed.

Cormac wore a dark suit under a long camel coat.

He was nervous, and the nerves looked good on him.

"Don't forget the pause after her name," I told him at the tent, handing over the cue card. "Wait for her to look at you. Then say the line about the lantern."

"Got it." He held my wrist for a second. "You wrote this, Em. It's the best thing you've done."

"It's just a script."

"It isn't."

I went behind the main camera and put on my headset.

On the monitor, they walked out into the snow in the first light.

Cormac stopped on the mark I had taped, turned and took her gloved hands.

He said every word I had written.

He paused after her name and waited for her to look up.

When he got to the lantern line, his voice caught the way it always did on the honest ones.
