Chapter 10: The Missing Heiress
The man in the gray suit would not come through the second gate, so Ansel had him brought into the front room.
He sat on the edge of the sofa with his leather folder on his knees and did not touch the coffee.
He was sixty and tidy and very polite, and I disliked him on sight.
"Miss Thornbury," he said.
"Kincaid."
"Of course. Forgive me. I represent your uncle, Desmond Thornbury, and the trust that holds your grandfather's estate."
"How did you find me?"
"We read the papers," he said, and smiled. "A young neurologist saved a four-star general at a Richmond hospital. The video from the ER went through a lot of inboxes. Mr. Thornbury saw your face."
He opened the folder and slid one photograph across the table.
It was my mother at twenty-five, in a white lab coat, laughing at something outside the frame.
She had my mouth and my jaw and the exact wrinkle between my eyebrows.
I looked at it for a long time, and nobody spoke.
Ansel stood at the window with his arms crossed.
He had not looked at the photograph.
He was watching the lawyer.
"Your mother's family has searched for you for twenty-seven years," the lawyer said.
"Your grandfather left the entire Thornbury estate to the children of his daughter, your mother. Shipping, the defense division, the real estate."
"It is the largest private fortune in the state."
"It's mine," I said.
"It's yours, once you're confirmed. A swab will do. And in the meantime Mr. Thornbury asks only for the chance to welcome his niece home."
"I've seen what he paid my father to keep me out of it."
