Chapter 22: What Paige Owes

Paige was sentenced on a Thursday, in a courtroom with a flag and a cracked window.

I sat in the second row with Ansel beside me.

He had walked in without a cane, in a plain suit, and the bailiff had saluted him by reflex.

Paige came in from the side door in a gray jumpsuit.

Her blond hair was pulled back in a rubber band.

She did not look at the room.

The doorbell video played on a screen.

I watched my stepsister climb out of the driver's seat and stand on the lawn laughing.

The judge let it run to the end.

Then she took off her glasses.

"Miss Kincaid, you struck a vehicle and a mailbox while intoxicated, left the scene, and gave a false account to the police that put your stepsister's career at risk."

"I didn't mean to," Paige said, in a small voice.

"You asked her to confess on camera."

"My mother did."

"Your mother will answer for her own statement," the judge said. "Two years in the county facility, a suspended license for ten, and restitution to the homeowner."

Paige turned around then, and found me with her eyes.

"Tessa," she said. "Tessa, tell them it was Mom's idea. You know it was."

I did not answer her.

I had waited most of my life for her to say my name that way.

It meant nothing to me now.
