Chapter 16: Gold

The court stood frozen with the king's words still in the air.

"Majesty," Corisande said. "He murdered a captain of your Guard."

"Thirty years ago, in the crown's service, at the crown's need." The king held out his ringed hand. "Give Lord Morvaine back his staff, Dame Arvenne."

The two knights at Morvaine's sides had already let go of his arms.

Corisande stood there with the gray staff in her fist.

Ryota watched her jaw work.

She walked to Morvaine and put the staff back in his hand.

"Thank you, Dame," Morvaine said quietly.

"The charge of heresy falls with its accuser's oath," said the high priest, in her bell voice. "The accused goes free."

Nobody cheered.

The court filed out of the Temple without looking at one another.

Ryota came out onto the Temple steps behind them and stopped.

For a moment he thought it was snowing.

Then a flake landed on the back of his hand, gray and soft, and it smeared when he touched it.

Ash was falling over the whole city.

Down in the square, people were holding out their palms and staring at them.
